What to Expect When Moving Funds Off an Exchange for the First Time

Moving cryptocurrency from an exchange to your own wallet is irreversible. Unlike a bank transfer, there is no customer service line that can recall a transaction sent to the wrong address. This reality makes the first withdrawal nerve-wracking for most beginners — and rightly so.

Step 1: Confirm Your Wallet Is Ready

Before initiating any withdrawal, verify that your hardware wallet is initialized, your seed phrase is backed up on paper or steel, and you have successfully completed a test recovery. If any of these steps is incomplete, stop and finish them first.

Step 2: Start Small

Send a test amount — many clients choose the exchange minimum or an equivalent of ₩10,000–20,000 — to an address you generate and verify on your device screen. Wait for the required network confirmations. Only then proceed with a larger transfer.

Step 3: Understand Network Fees

Exchanges charge withdrawal fees that vary by asset and network congestion. Bitcoin fees fluctuate with mempool activity. Ethereum layer-1 fees can spike during busy periods. Check the fee displayed on the exchange withdrawal screen and compare it to the amount you are moving. Withdrawing ₩50,000 worth of Bitcoin when the fee is ₩15,000 may not make sense.

Step 4: Double-Check the Network

Sending Ethereum-based tokens requires selecting the correct network (ERC-20, not BEP-20 or another chain). A network mismatch can result in lost funds. Your hardware wallet software and the exchange withdrawal page must agree on the network.

Step 5: Wait Patiently

Blockchain confirmations take time. Bitcoin may require three to six confirmations depending on the exchange policy. Ethereum varies with network load. Do not panic if the exchange shows “processing” for thirty minutes.
